Red Bull X-Fighters 2015
Red Bull X-Fighters returns to the Union Buildings, located in the heart of Pretoria for the second year in a row. 21 of the world’s best FMX riders battled it out to see you would raise the coveted trophy and win the title.
Once again we were asked to build the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies for the winners. However this time the concept of the award was put out to a Competition where entrants proposed their sketches and the winners design would be built by us. The competition brought some interesting ideas from the entrants, but in the end the concept of a FMX helmet with Kudu horns, mounted to a framed back board was the clear winner.
The challenge with making this piece was that because of international transporting regulations the horns could not be real, so then the solution of 3D printing the helmet and horns became a reality. The Helmet and horns together is the largest 3D printed piece ever printed in Cape Town and probably South Africa and had to be made in separate pieces and fused together to create the piece as a whole.
A solid African Mahogany mounting back board was laser etched with a custom FMX and African inspired Ndebele print. A groove slot was CNC routed into the back board so a brass, copper and nickel plated bike chain could be fixed inside, referencing the respective gold, silver and bronze winners.
Lastly the Red Bull X-Fighters logo was laser cut out of steel and the 30 odd pieces were individually hand painted in the brands colours to create a solid multi dimensional logo that really stands out.
Over 100 hours of work went into the 3D modeling, design, printing and making of the 3 trophies and is evident in the attention to detail and finish of the pieces.
